As an author, director, producer and artist, Clive Barker as been one of the more influential figures in modern horror. Stephen King was even once quoted as saying,” I have seen the future of horror and his name is Clive Barker.
Barker who was born in Liverpool, England in 1952 , has written and published several books often fluctuate between horror and fantasy and often times combining both. He is most known for The Hellbound Heart, The Books of Blood series, Sacrament, Cabal, Scarlett Gospels and Abarat. That is just scratching the surface of his literary works.
When it comes to filmaking, Barker has only written and directed three movies, all adapted form his own books. In 1987, there was his first movie, Hellraiser which was adapted from his novella, The Hellbound Heart. To this day Hellraiser even though it is more of a cult film and not as mainstream is still regarded as one of the best horror films by many. He would go on to serve as executive producer on the next three Hellraiser movies but would eventually walk away from the franchise before gaining the movie rights back and produced the Hellraiser re-boot in 2022.
In 1990, Barker made Nightbreed which was adapted from Cabal. The theatrical cut was heavily messed with by the studios so be sure to watch the director’s cut instead. Five years later, Barker wrote and directed Lord of Illsuions adapted from his book, The Last Illusion.
Barker would also serve as excutive producer on Candyman and Candyman 2 which were adapted from his short story, The Forbiden.
Due to studio interference, Barker would decide not to direct anymore and focussed more on writing and creating his artwork which he still does to this day.
Personally , Clive Barker has been one of the main influences on why I started writing in the first place. I often enjoy his themes regarding how sometimes it’s humanity that are the real monsters and how we often become slaves to our vices and desires. Those that know me are aware that Hellraiser is my favorite horror movie of all time. I have yet to meet him in person and from what i hear, he may not be doing anymore public appearances. So chalk that up as another reregret of mine. But, never say never.
I'm a huge Barker fan myself. Had the privilege on a couple of occasions to meet and hang out with the man. They say you should never meet your heros but if you have the chance to meet Barker do it. He's cool as hell. Loves to talk. Treated me like he knew me for years. Such a great talent.
I'd post some pics but it looks like it won't let me.
Fellow Barker fan. He was at a con in Knoxville last year I took my daughter to, and I heard that was going to be his last public appearance. But who knows.
Hellraiser is top 20 horror movies for me, love his short stories, and Weaveworld. Want to love Night Breed but I can’t help but be let down every time a I’ve tried it. Partly it’s the lead actor on top of major studio interference.
Need to see Lord of Illusions again. Haven’t see it since it first came out in the 90’s.
