Chapter 15: Arriving in Haddonfield
Back in Haddonfield, Tommy is sitting in his den. He is drinking a beer and thinking about thirty years ago on Halloween night when Michael Myers returned to Haddonfield. He remembers telling Laurie that the Boogeyman was outside the Wallace house, but she didn’t believe him. Memories of Michael Myers chasing after Laurie who protected both Lindsey and him emerge.
Rachel walks into the room and says, “Thinking about that night again.”
Tommy replies,” How did you guess?”
” Because the only time you ever drink this early in the day is when you are thinking about 1978 and I only drink this early when I’m thinking about Halloween 1988”, as Rachel takes a drink of Tommy’s beer.
” You’re right, I was thinking about that night and the night you went through, but I am really worried about tonight. We, finally, were able to get Jamie out of Smiths Grove and just when it sounds like she is doing really well. Everything starts repeating itself all over again.”
Rachel says,” It’s almost like Michael waited till Jamie was released to start his terror again. Just like he waited in 1978 and again in 1988, and now here we are in 2008, and it looks like he may be back.
Ever since that horrible night twenty years ago, I’ve always felt like I failed, Jamie. I was supposed to be her big sister and protect her.”
Tommy reassures Rachel and says,” You did protect her. You saved her life a couple times that night. The only one to blame is Michael. Besides, you became one damn good lawyer and got her out of Smiths Grove”.
” I had quite a bit of help from you, but I wonder, were we too late in getting her out? My parents are gone now, and your dad is living somewhere in the middle of Alaska. We’re both unable to have kids. It’s like Jamie is the only family we have left.”
” Jamie being our only family is not such a bad thing, but we could always do what we once talked about.”
Rachel responds,” You mean adopt.”
Tommy replies,” I think once we get out of this town and settle down in Aurora. That would be the right time”.
Rachel then sighs but then smiles and says,” I remember not being too keen on the idea at first but over the last couple of weeks, I’m thinking that more and more, it would be nice to add to our family.”
“Well, let’s get through tonight and once we get settled, we can look into it. Besides, I think Jamie would love to have a niece or nephew.”
Changing the subject, Tommy then asks,” So what did Kirsty actually say in her text?”
Rachel looks at Tommy and says, “Kirsty said it was important, and it would explain who is responsible for that murder at the Myers house.”.
” Well, if it’s Michael, it doesn’t make much sense that he would kill someone in Haddonfield then drive five hours to Valparaiso, Indiana and kill three people at some random diner. Providing he was responsible for those murders.”
” The way Lindsey described the crime scene at the Myers house, it just doesn’t sound like Michael. He normally stabs or strangles people. Not tear them apart in a thousand pieces.”
With a puzzled look and a feeling of dread Tommy replies,” So there could be two psychopaths loose in this town? God help us all then.”
Just then Kirsty pulls in the driveway. “There’s Kirsty now” says Tommy.
Rachel opens the back door, and Kirsty enters the kitchen and says, “Hey guys. I’m sorry for the short notice and I was not specific in my text?”
Tommy replies,” Just tell us that Jamie is ok. Rachel was saying she sounded petrified over the phone.”
Rachel adds,” Yeah, she’s worried that Michael is coming for us and wanted us to leave town, but we had some court stuff to take care of.”
Tommy looks at Kirsty and asks,” Michael wasn’t responsible for the murder at the Myers house, was he?”
Kirsty replies,” No, he wasn’t.”
“Then who?” Rachel asks.
“More like what.,” Kirsty answers takes a deep breath and continues,” It’s a long story and you all might have a hard time believing it. You both better have a seat. Shit, where do I begin?”
